Philip Bradatsch is probably the most outrageous thing the German indie scene has produced in recent years. One with attitude, one who takes a stand. He doesn’t care about current listening habits or playlists, but he doesn’t want to serve them. Instead, he presents them with cryptic, Dylanesque set pieces, creates a maelstrom of images, spaces and voices. And sometimes he unabashedly crosses the comfort line. Then he throws them out, the reprehensible feelings that are so true that no one wants to admit them. He is not even afraid of arrogance, and certainly not of the German language, as he now impressively demonstrates for the first time on his new album “Jesus von Haidhausen”.
After the first wince, you think he dares to do something, but likeable understatement is not Philip Bradatsch’s thing. Afterwards, you’re glad not to be alone with some unpleasant feelings. And you are inspired by the musical abundance. For Philip Bradatsch comes up with surprises, his songs slowly build up, oppress, angrily rebel and dissolve into wonderful harmonies in the next moment.
Between dark and threatening soundscapes, suddenly a laconic smirk, in the dull world-weariness a tenderness that warms the heart. And behind him, the fabulous Cola Rum Boys rumble, groan and rock like a true joy.
Solo or in a band collective, in the end Philip Bradatsch is probably what nobody dared to miss for so long: Rock’n’Roll
