Observing the outside world, the realities of others’ lives or one’s own emotional world – these are probably the most important means of writing songs. Songs to which you would immediately assign the words “strong”, “moving” or “soulful”, because they suddenly develop the potential to pick you up, take you in and never let you go. The Würzburg folk duo Hannah & Falco succeed in evoking precisely these feelings. Perhaps precisely because the two of them look very closely. It is not without reason that their debut album is titled “Field Notes”, in reference to sketchy observations and crude notes about the world.
The pair’s characteristically polyphonic vocals steer through the disparate narratives and soundscapes, exposing the stunning chemistry between Hannah Weidlich and Falco Eckhof, whose folk-pop softness is reminiscent of international projects like Better Oblivion Communitiy Center (Conor Oberst & Phoebe Bridgers), Bright Eyes or Angus & Julia Stone.
